The defending NFC champs probably knew that they were going to struggle just a bit in their opening game of the season. Going to the Windy City is never easy for the opposition, but the Chicago Bears ultimately came up just five yards shy of pulling off the upset of the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1.
Though Atlanta never trailed in this game, there was always a sense that the Bears were right there. They were locked into a 10-10 tie at the end of the first half thanks to a brilliantly run, 75-yard drive generated by Mike Glennon to take Chicago into the locker room on a high note.
Atlanta opened up a 20-10 lead in the third quarter, capped by an 88-yard strike from Matt Ryan to Austin Hooper that effectively assured both men would get their respective bonus point for reaching their milestone in passing and receiving stats.
But the Bears weren't done there. They rallied, running off another 75-yard drive to get back within 20-17 before allowing a field goal. But on the final drive of the game, Glennon did everything right until it came down to crunch time. When push came to shove, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer threw three straight incomplete passes before getting sacked on fourth down with the Bears just shy of the goal line.
