Morris, who signed with San Francisco just over a week ago, was immediately thrust into a competition with a handful of other options for the third spot on the depth chart following preseason injuries to Jerick McKinnon (hamstring) and Matt Breida (shoulder). Both injured backs project to be ready for Week 1, but their questionable durability has the team considering keeping a fourth running back. With Raheem Mostert expected to serve primarily on special teams, Morris' past experience as a starter in Washington could make him the ideal insurance policy behind the 49ers' top two options. Jeremy McNichols is also in the mix, but struggled while starting last week's preseason contest, finishing with 28 yards on 10 carries. Both McNichols and Morris should get ample chances to prove their worth in the pivotal third preseason game Saturday against the Colts.
