Even though the Houston Texans were thoroughly dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football in Week 6, they showed a lot of grit and were fortunate not to get clocked by more than the 42-34 final margin of defeat.
The Chiefs were on the field for over 37 minutes of this game, and there were simply no answers for anything they did. Kareem Hunt was bottled up for much of the first half by the stout Houston offensive line, but just his mere presence gave the Kansas City the ability to do anything it wanted with in the passing game. Alex Smith threw for three touchdowns and over 300 yards and on a night that was virtually perfect.
In the end, Hunt still exceeded 100 yards on the ground.
Credit goes out to Deshaun Watson for hanging in there as best he could. He beat his Projected Fantasy Points total for his fourth consecutive start thanks to a couple of passing touchdowns to Will Fuller in the second half.
Fuller suddenly has four touchdowns in his last two games since returning from injury, and he looks to be the favorite target of the young rookie, even beyond DeAndre Hopkins, who had three touchdowns of his own in this game, two of which came in garbage time.
The real story from this game is that J.J. Watt suffered a broken leg in the first quarter. Though there has been no official word from the team yet, Watt will reportedly need season-ending surgery to repair the damage.
The Texans defense was still very good last season with Watt missing 13 games, but this game against Kansas City turned out to be a debacle on that side of the ball without him. Future opponents, including perhaps the Browns in Week 6, could exceed their expectations with arguably the best defensive player in the NFL on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.
