Rather than carrying a third catcher in Lopez, the Padres elected to use their last bench spot on a more versatile option in Cory Spangenberg, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Lopez appeared in only three games during his latest stint with the Padres, receiving two at-bats.
