New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson played well on both sides of the ball during his high school football career in Florida, which led to him beginning his college career as a defensive back at Temple University.

Anderson redshirted in his first season with the Owls, and he saw some action on defense and special teams a year later. That would change, however, when Matt Rhule was hired to be Temple’s new head coach. He decided to put Anderson at wide receiver, where he was able to earn a starting job as the year progressed as the team dropped each of its first seven contests. Those personnel changes and the new role helped lead Anderson to have two monstrous performances late in the season.

His first standout game came against SMU when he had nine catches for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns. That effort set the school record for receiving yards in a single game. Just two weeks later, he made eight catches for 184 yards and two scores in a loss to Rutgers. Anderson finished the season with 44 catches for 791 yards and nine touchdowns. Thanks in part to his very good speed, he averaged 18 yards per catch.

Due to academic struggles, Anderson was ineligible to play in 2014, but he was a star player once again when he returned to the field for the 2015 season. He did not have any games of the same caliber as he did in 2013, but he was the team’s preferred target and had a pair of 100-yard games against East Carolina and Houston, respectively. In all, Anderson made 70 catches for 939 yards (13.4 yards per grab) and seven touchdowns in his senior season.

Following the campaign, Anderson competed in the East-West Shrine game, but he was not invited to the NFL Combine. Even so, he was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent.

The NFL was no guarantee for Anderson at that point, though, because he was competing against Jalin Marshall, Chandler Worthy, Jeremy Ross and Charon Peake to be New York’s No. 5 wideout. Quickly, Anderson proved he was the right man for the job as he made 13 receptions for 264 yards and three touchdowns in the preseason. This earned him a spot on the Jets’ 53-man roster to compete for touches alongside Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Quincy Enunwa and Jalin Marshall.

Decker only played in three games before injuring his shoulder and missing the rest of the season. This helped Anderson move up to the No. 3 spot where he was productive despite the team’s struggles under center. Anderson made 42 catches on 78 targets (53.8 percent catch rate) for 587 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 16 games during his rookie season.

Prior to the 2017 campaign, Brandon Marshall signed with the New York Giants, Decker agreed to a deal with the Tennessee Titans and Enunwa injured his neck and was ruled out for the year. This series of transgressions left Anderson as New York’s No. 1 wide receiver. He also benefited from the Jets having upgrading at quarterback with veteran Josh McCown taking the snaps.
