Chris Godwin Fantasy News and Statistics

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin made a name for himself as an athlete growing up in Delaware. He was a four-year varsity football player at Middletown High School, where he helped his team win a pair of state championships. He was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year for his play during his senior campaign, and he competed in the Under Armour All-American Game. Following this illustrious high school career, he excelled at Penn State.

Godwin was a contributor for three seasons for the Nittany Lions. Initially, he worked his way into the team’s offense during the 2014 season but was not heavily relied upon yet. He was behind DeSean Hamilton and Geno Lewis on the depth chart. Godwin did, however, have a breakout performance in the Pinstripe Bowl that season when he made seven catches for 140 yards and a touchdown. He was a Big Ten All-Freshman selection and his excellent bowl game performance set the tone for him in his Nittany Lions career moving forward.

A season later, Godwin’s growth and development allowed him to secure the No. 1 wide receiver job and be Christian Hackenberg’s preferred target. He recorded over 100 receiving yards in five of the last seven games of the season, including in the Taxslayer Bowl when he made six catches for 133 yards. Godwin finished the year with 69 receptions for 1,101 yards and five touchdowns. Despite this excellence, he was not the recipient of any major awards. However, he was named to the All-Big Ten Offensive Second Team.

In 2016, Godwin was once again the top receiver Penn State had on its roster, but his production took a dip. Teams started to double cover him to prevent the serious deep threat. This led to more looks and targets for Hamilton and breakout transfer tight end Mike Gesicki. The Nittany Lions enjoyed more team success, but Godwin only had three games that season in which he had over 100 yards. He even had a contest in which he did not make any catches (against Maryland).

He finished out his college career strong, however, as he made nine catches for 187 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Rose Bowl against USC. For his performance in 2016, Godwin was named an All-Big Ten Third Team selection.

Shortly after the Rose Bowl, Godwin declared early for the 2017 NFL Draft. He then showed off his athletic ability at the NFL Combine and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the draft.

The Bucs were one of the league’s most disappointing teams in 2017 despite having a talented receiving corps. Godwin was able to sneak in on the action despite the squad being led by Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson in that department. He settled in as the team’s No. 4 receiver as he was also behind Adam Humphries.

Early in the season, Godwin was seldom-used. As the team continued losing, though, he received extended playing time and performed well. He had three catches on six targets for 98 yards on Christmas Eve in a tight loss to the Carolina Panthers. If that sort of success is any indication, then he is an intriguing sleeper option for the 2018 season.
