Andy Reid has had enough of the Alex Smith era. Although Smith has led the Kansas City Chiefs to 11 wins in three of the past four seasons, Reid decided to make a play for a quarterback he thinks can take the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl. That’s where Patrick Mahomes II comes into the picture, as he is one of the newest members of the AFC West franchise.
Kansas City traded two first-rounders and a third-round pick to Buffalo for the right to move up to No. 10 and get Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft. Reid drafted him with an eye toward the future, but Mahomes might see the field as a rookie if he is impressive enough.
Mahomes was a superstar at Texas Tech, shining in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense. He took over as the starter late in 2014 and quickly showed that he was capable of running the Air Raid offense well despite his youth. In his first full game, he threw for 393 yards and four touchdowns against Oklahoma, as Texas Tech took a lead into the fourth quarter against the Sooners. Although the Red Raiders eventually lost, it was a sign of things to come. Mahomes lit up Iowa State and Baylor to close out the season.
In his sophomore campaign, Mahomes showed that his debut year wasn’t a fluke. He started every game in 2015 and threw for over 300 yards in 10 of his 13 contests. Mahomes was able to flash his skill as a runner, too, gaining 456 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. The team’s defensive woes were a big reason why it only finished the regular season 7-5, but the Red Raiders scored big wins over Arkansas and Texas.
As a junior, Mahomes had some phenomenal performances, including one for the ages in a shootout loss against Oklahoma. Multiple school, conference, and national records were broken that night as both offenses ran amok. Mahomes tied the NCAA record for passing yards in a game, throwing for 734 yards against the Sooners. He ended up smashing the record for total yards in a game, as his 85 rushing yards added up to 819 total yards on the night. He threw the ball an astounding 88 times—one short of the national record.
Mahomes left Lubbock with some eye-popping numbers despite playing just a little more than two seasons. He finished his collegiate career with 11,252 passing yards and 93 touchdowns, and as the No. 10 overall pick was just the second Red Raider to be taken in the top 10 of the draft in over 50 years.
The plan is to have Mahomes sit and learn for a season under Smith, but the rookie just might be ready to pull a Dak Prescott. Entering the 2017 season, teammates have raved about his maturity, and he has been extremely impressive during training camp and preseason. Smith will be the starter for the season opener, but Mahomes’ potential might be too good for him to sit on the sideline the entire season.
