As a star dual-threat quarterback in the state of Florida, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett was able to earn his way onto the Florida Gators football team after being recruited as a four-star prep player in the Sunshine State.

During his UF career, Brissett was not the most effective player, although he earned some playing time very early on. As a true freshman during the 2011 season, he won the backup quarterback job behind John Brantley, who missed two games with an injury. This gave Brissett an opportunity to log a pair of starts that year. However, they did not go well.

He had his first start against LSU and threw a pair of interceptions. On the season, he completed 18 of his 39 pass attempts for 206 yards with two touchdowns and four picks.

A year later, Brissett beat out Jeff Driskel for the Gators starting quarterback job only to lose the nod after the first game of the year. In the start against Bowling Green, he completed three of his five passes for 31 yards. Following the season, he transferred to North Carolina State.

After he was ineligible to play during the 2013 campaign, Brissett snagged the Wolfpack’s starting quarterback job in 2014, and he performed much better than his stint in Gainesville. In his ACC debut, he completed 28 of his 40 passes for 291 yards with three touchdowns and an interception as NC State beat Georgia Southern, 24-23.

Brissett did not miss a start all year and completed 221 of his 370 pass attempts (59.7 percent completion rate) for 2,606 yards with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions. On the ground, he also ran for 529 yards and three scores on 124 attempts.

As a senior, Brissett enjoyed similar success. He had 237 completions on 395 attempts (60 percent completion rate) for 2,662 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also picked up 370 yards and six scores on 139 carries. Following the season, he was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Brissett came into his rookie campaign as New England’s third-string quarterback behind Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo, so he was not expected to play a down all year. That did not end up being the case, though, as Brady was suspended for the first four games of the season because of Deflategate and Garoppolo suffered an injury midway through the second quarter of the team’s second game of the season against the Miami Dolphins.

When Brissett played, the Patriots changed their offense accordingly. In three games, he completed 34 of his 55 pass attempts for 400 yards while picking up 83 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. In his second start, the Patriots were shut out 16-0 by the Buffalo Bills. After that, Tom Brady returned, so Brissett did not play another down all year.

Brissett was traded to the Indianapolis Colts prior to the 2017 regular season since he would have been New England’s third-stringer yet again. Instead, he ended up being Indy’s starting quarterback for most of the season due to an Andrew Luck shoulder injury. In that role, Brissett showed he can be a serviceable fill-in despite the Colts having a losing record with him under center.
