Clayton Kershaw was the perennial NL Cy Young Award winner until Max Scherzer shifted to the National League and signed with the Nationals to bring some competition to the race. Having won back-to-back NL Cy Young Awards to go with his 2013 AL trophy, the 33-year-old right-hander will be looking to follow up yet another great season with one in 2018. His ERA has dropped for four consecutive seasons and his WHIP has sat below 1.000 in four of his last five years. He’s a dominant, innings-eating pitcher with only one fatal flaw: the home run ball. Even with 53 dingers allowed the last two years, Scherzer’s got the stuff, strikeouts and numbers to be one of most reliable starters in baseball.
2017: While a 16-win season isn’t much for a two-time 20-game winner, his 2.51 ERA and 0.902 WHIP were the best of Scherzer’s career. Even missing a couple starts, Scherzer managed to throw over 200 innings in 2017 for the fifth straight season, providing consistency in both quality and quantity. A five-time top-5 finisher in Cy Young voting, Scherzer led the NL in strikeouts with 268. The punchout rate grew for the fourth straight year and his homers allowed dipped back to 22 after 31 in 2016. Regardless of where you look, the numbers and trends were strong for Scherzer in 2017.
