One of the budding young stars of the Baltimore Orioles rotation, Kevin Gausman received the 2017 Opening Day start albeit by default. He has shown a great deal of promise throughout his career. He will be 27 years old in the 2018 campaign and will need to break out for a big year. The time is now for the right-hander out of LSU. Baltimore is banking on him becoming a top-of-the-rotation arm. He’s not a bad gamble for Dober Fantasy Points, but until he provides consistency, he’s still just that: a gamble.
2017: It looked like he put it all together in 2016 and was primed for a breakout 2017 campaign. Instead of breaking out, however, Gausman broke down. The right-hander ended the year 11-12 with a 4.68 ERA and 1.495 WHIP in a career-high 186.2 innings of work. Those numbers landed him a 93 ERA+ and were more fitting for a No. 4 or No. 5 starter than the team’s Opening Day arm. Interestingly, it took a nice second half for Gausman’s numbers to look as good as they did. He was lost in the first half, getting knocked out of games early and pitching to a 5.85 ERA in his first 19 games. After the break, he was much better, going 6-5 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.204 WHIP. His control vastly improved and he, once again, showed the promise that continues to make the O’s hopeful.
