Baseball has enjoyed a renaissance of young talent, but it’s also seen rising stars at the shortstop position reminiscent of the age of A-Rod, Jeter and Garciaparra. Among the best of the group is Corey Seager. The Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop matches up well against Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Francisco Lindor and the rest of the young crop manning the most important defensive position in the infield. 2017: Seager missed a few games due to injury, but he still played in 145 contests and did a good job following up his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2016 with another strong year. He did, however, take a bit of a step backward—as many players do—in his sophomore season. Still, he batted nearly .300, ending with a .295 average to go along with a .375 OBP and .479 slugging percentage. While surrounded by great offensive talent, Seager was an important offensive cog in the heart of the order. Although his homers dipped in the year of the long ball (from 26 in 2016 to 22 in 2017), he drove in more runs and still managed to notch 55 extra-base hits while ending the year 25 percent better than the average hitter, according to OPS+, while playing a premier defensive position.
