Baseball is a game of youth and Rafael Devers has plenty of it. The next great rookie, Devers got the call to the big leagues with the Boston Red Sox and delivered immediately. He’ll have his first full season in 2018, but he made a great first impression in 58 games last year. Throughout the minors, Devers exhibited strong bat-to-ball skills and a good eye. He added power to his game—thanks to a bit more size—in Portland and Pawtucket in 2017, continuing it in the big leagues. His youth makes him a bit unpredictable based on Dober Fantasy Points, but his pace from last year would make him a top point earner in 2018.
2017: Before 2017, Devers hadn’t played above High-A Salem where he spent all of 2016, hitting 11 homers. He had a big year in Double-A in 2017, hitting .300 with 18 bombs in 77 games. That earned him a promotion to Pawtucket and, shortly thereafter, up to Boston as the Sox needed someone to play third. Thought of at the time as a short-term fill-in, Devers took the opportunity and ran with it. He played just 58 games, but he hit 10 homers and drove in 30 runs with a .284 average. He struck out a ton, but he also showed the ability to draw the occasional walk. It was a great year. He not only landed in the Majors, but he secured the third base job for 2018.
