Paul Goldschmidt has long been one of the most underrated and underpaid stars in the game. After striking a very team-friendly deal early in his career, Goldy has gone on to rake year in and year out. One of the few first basemen that offers power, contact and speed, the Arizona Diamondback is a perennial 140 OPS+ bat with as many as 36 homers in a season and as many as 32 steals in a campaign. He’s yet to be a 30-30 guy in any given season, but he has the skill set to do just that. The main question is the support around him. He thrived with J.D. Martinez behind him in 2017, but he will likely go back to being the main cog in the order again in 2018. Regardless, the Arizona first baseman has shown consistency like no other, providing predictable Dober Fantasy Points thanks to a diverse skill set.
2017: While 2017 was a monster season for Goldschmidt, it again doesn’t stand out given his remarkable consistency. Nevertheless, the numbers speak volumes. In his last season in his 20s, Goldschmidt hit .297. It was the fifth straight season in which his average was at least that high after topping out at .321 in 2015. To go along with the average, he walked 94 times for a .404 OBP. Overall, he produced a .297/.404/.563 slash line. While Chase Field is a hitter-friendly environment, those numbers are impressive in any park and let to a 140 OPS+. On the power side, Goldy hit 36 jacks and added 34 doubles and three triples. He drove in 120 runs and scored 117. No matter what number you focus on, Goldschmidt delivered. There are very few holes in his swing or in his game in general.
