Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts is already among baseball’s elite players as he enters the 2018 campaign at 25 years old. Betts burst onto the scene in a brief 52-game stint in 2014 with a 126 OPS+. From there, he continued performing well. He showed some adjustment in 2015, but by his second full season he was a top-two finisher in the AL MVP race. While his outfield defense provides some of his 24.1 rWAR total value a bit over three seasons, his offense is dynamic—and consistent. Even in a down 2017 season, he was a strong producer of Dober Fantasy Points. He’s as reliable an offensive player that exists outside of Mike Trout.

2017: It was a down season for Betts in 2017. The Red Sox right fielder hit just .264 and saw his OPS drop 94 points from his 2016 campaign. Nonetheless, Betts still ended with an .803 OPS and finished sixth in the AL MVP voting. His 108 OPS+, however, wasn’t great. His dip from 31 homers in 2016 to 24 in 2017 was also troublesome, particularly considering the power surge throughout the rest of the league. While the power numbers dropped, Betts still produced 72 extra-base hits while also keeping his OBP elevated at .344. His average dipped, but Betts showed more patience at the dish, and opposing pitchers showed more respect. Betts drew 77 walks while striking out only 79 times. That strikeout-to-walk ratio is rare in this era of baseball.
