The list of top third basemen in the game usually includes Nolan Arenado and Manny Machado with other names sprinkled in before Anthony Rendon pops into the conversation. In fact, Rendon isn’t even the most recognizable offensive player on the Washington Nationals. He’s behind Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy and maybe even Ryan Zimmerman. Despite that, he has quietly established himself as one of the game’s best all-around hitters regardless of position. With average, power, patience and a surprisingly low strikeout total given the era, Rendon is a force when it comes to Dober Fantasy Points and a remarkably still undervalued talent.
2017: In 2014, Rendon was the best player on the Nationals. After a couple down seasons, the third baseman bounced back in a big way in 2017 by establishing himself as a premier offensive threat. While not as powerful as Harper or some others, Rendon produced 25 home runs, topping 20 for the third time in his five-year career. Along with the dingers, he was a clutch hitter, recording 100 RBIs and delivering 41 doubles en route to a .301/.403/.533 slash line. His 140 OPS+ proves he’s 40 percent better than the average hitter. And his slash line shows the ideal mix of contact, patience and power. He’s a complete hitter in an era full of boom-or-bust bats. Given that, his 82 strikeouts is a comparatively low number to many of the game’s premier hitters.
