While most of the offensive core of this team tested the free agent waters in the offseason, Salvador Perez remained under contract for the Kansas City Royals and is a key cog in the franchise’s rebuilding process. The young backstop is a defensive wizard behind the plate and a 20-homer bat beside it. A low OBP has hindered Perez from taking off offensively, but his power makes him a solid bat at a premium position. After all, catcher is not a typically reliable source of Dober Fantasy Points, but there are a handful of reliable contributors of which Perez is certainly one.
2017: Perez had floundered a bit since hitting .292 with a .757 OPS in his first full season of action. Over the previous three campaigns, he continued to provide excellent defense, but he was undisciplined at the plate. He hit some home runs and drove in some runs, but his average and especially his OBP remained low. He hit .268 in 2017, which was his highest mark since 2013, but with only 17 walks in 499 plate appearances, he ended with a .297 OBP—his fourth straight year failing to get on base 30 percent of the time. Thanks to a .495 slugging percentage, however, his OPS soared to .792 and his OPS+ topped 100 for the first time in four seasons. With 27 home runs and 80 RBIs, Perez delivered some runs, but he was ultimately an average offensive contributor.
