The Chicago Cubs continue to promote strong offensive talent to the big leagues. Willson Contreras was one of those that came up and blossomed during the team’s 2016 World Series run, leading to the young backstop getting the starting catcher gig in 2017. He filled in without missing a beat, hitting in the heart of the order and providing good, professional at-bats every time he got the chance. As a catcher, playtime is always a factor, but Contreras established himself as a starter at the demanding position and one that packs a punch with his arm as well as his bat.
2017: Catcher isn’t a position filled with high Dober Fantasy Point performers, but as far as the position goes, Contreras ranked among the better backstops in the game in 2017 with a 6.77 DFP per game average. Accumulating 3.9 rWAR, Contreras caught most of the time for the Cubs, but his 117 games and 377 at-bats were still a bit below some of the more prolific catchers in the game. Still, the limited playing time kept him fresh and he delivered when he got the chance without a sophomore slump. Contreras showed both patience and power at the dish with a .276/.356/.499 slash line and a 119 OPS+. At a position known more for defense, Contreras provided well above-average offense with 21 home runs, 74 RBIs and even a few stolen bases.
