The Cy Young Award remains elusive to Chris Sale, who finished second in balloting in 2017. The veteran southpaw, however, provided all that the Boston Red Sox could’ve hoped for — and more — when they made the offseason deal to acquire the hard thrower in exchange for a pair of baseball’s best prospects. Sale is the leader of a pitching staff that already has two former Cy Young Award winners, and he is one of baseball’s best and most reliable southpaws. Few pitchers rank ahead of Sale, who is a consistent producer of Dober Fantasy Points.

2017: Through much of the 2017 campaign, Sale was the heavy favorite to win his first Cy Young Award. In the end, though, he finished just behind Corey Kluber for the honor after some second-half hiccups. The power lefty was a bit homer happy in September, allowing nine of his 24 dingers in that month. He still produced solid results, but he was showing fatigue, which carried into a lackluster performance in the ALDS against Houston. The slow finish aside, Sale still produced monster numbers and was one of the best Dober assets in the sport. With a 17-8 record, he boasted a .680 winning percentage, the second-best figure of his career. In addition, he led the AL in innings, strikeouts and FIP. He pitched to a 2.90 ERA and 0.970 WHIP. Despite the late-season struggles, he still managed to post a respectable homer per nine inning rate which, along with his 7.16 strikeout-to-walk ratio, led to a 2.45 FIP.
