The face of the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise will play the final season of his contract with the San Francisco Giants. Andrew McCutchen is still only 31 years old and is looking to build off a strong bounce-back season in 2017 and position himself for a nice contract when he hits free agency. His struggles in 2016 helped hide just how good he is, but his Dober Fantasy Points don’t lie. He had a solid 2017 campaign and before 2016 enjoyed a dynamic four-year span that produced an MVP and four top-5 finishes as he combined speed, power, average and on-base percentage while playing elite center field defense. He’s a corner outfielder now, but he still can produce at an above-average offensive level even for the position.
2017: Just a couple years removed from being among the best of the best, McCutchen did well returning his name back to the list of the game’s elite in 2017. After falling to average production in 2016, Cutch had a resurgence in 2017. Through April and May, he looked more like the 2016 version of himself and was settling in for his second career as a mere average outfielder, then June came and Cutch hit .411 for the month with a .505 OBP and .689 slugging. He drove in 23 runs and scored 22 more. He followed the hot June with a nearly as hot July posting a .322/.434/.667 slash line. While he regressed a bit down the stretch, he still produced a .775 second half OPS and ended the year with a 120 OPS+ as he was 20 percent better than the average bat.
