Luis Severino Fantasy News and Statistics

Going into the 2017 season, the biggest question mark on the New York Yankees was the team’s rotation. Masahiro Tanaka was considered the sure thing while the rest was a question mark. As it turns out, New York’s true ace was Luis Severino, who was one of the game’s biggest Dober Fantasy Points performers. As a 23-year-old, the right-hander pitched to a sub-3 ERA and came in third in Cy Young Award voting. After a 2016 season that saw him relegated to the bullpen and the minors, Severino doubled down on his 2015 debut, delivering quality innings and showing ace-like stuff.

2017: We saw a glimpse of what Severino was capable of during his rookie season in 2015, but the righty regressed in 2016 as the league adjusted. He finally adjusted back in 2017 and was dominant. When Tanaka struggled for the Yanks, Severino stepped up as the ace. While he stumbled in the AL Wild Card game, he got back up and pitched well throughout the rest of the playoffs. In the regular season, he went 14-6 with a 2.98 ERA and 1.040 WHIP. He recorded 4.5 strikeouts for every walk and struck out 230 batters. His stuff is truly dominant and he started to show that he could control it and use it properly in 2017. All restrictions will come off him in 2018 after the team tried to restrain his innings a bit. Strong against both righties and lefties, the biggest question now is just how well he’ll throw at Yankee Stadium. There were clear splits in 2017 as he allowed 15 of 21 homers at home. The short right-field porch is a challenge for any pitcher.
